THE MUREX SHELL
Ceremonial robes in ancient Rome were coloured purple and blue with dyes produced in Carthage and Phoenicia from the shells of the Murex mollusc.
The dyes communicated political status and were the basis of the Phoenician economy.
Coded communications of status and values are as central to economics and politics today as they were to the Romans and Phoenicians.
